Nick Martin

Profile

Nick Martin is a PHD candidate in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam and studies the comparative electoral strategies of political parties with a focus on parties of the radical and mainstream left. Before starting his doctoral research Nick was Chief Executive of the Green Party of England Wales and responsible for amongst other things the party strategy and its General Election campaign in 2017.  He has more than twenty years’ experience of party organization in a number of roles including as a candidate and election agent.  Nick has a B.A Hons degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and an M.Phil In Sociology (specializing in Industrial Sociology) from Oxford University, and an MBA from the London Business School.

Education

Nick went to Highgate wood Comprehensive School in North London, and was educated at the University of Oxford and the London Business School. From 1979 to 1982 he studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at St Annes College Oxford focusing on Politics and Economics in his final two years of study.  In 1980 he won a Collections prize for work in micro-economics. Staying in Oxford for his Masters Nick took an M.Phil in Sociology at Nuffield College.  For his masters thesis Nick explored the conditions supporting non-hierarchical and cooperative forms of organisational management.

Between 1989 and 1991 Nick studied part-time for an MBA at the London Business School, completing it with distinctions for course work in Macro-economics and Management Accounting.

Career

In the 35 years between completing his Masters degree and starting his PHD studies Nick enjoyed a varied career.  His first job was at Westminster as a Research Assistant to Bryan Gould M.P. then the Labour Party Shadow Spokesperson for Trade and Industry.  After leaving Westminster Nick had a spell as a management consultant and then a Parliamentary lobbyist before co-founding a management consultancy business specializing in work with the charitable and local government sectors. The desire to confirm his approach to management led Nick into senior management, for 11 years in the legal sector, and then at a think-tank and the UK’s largest couple counselling agency.  His most recent senior management role was as Chief Executive of the Green Party of England and Wales where he oversaw the Party’s 2017 General election Campaign and led the development and execution of the Party’s political strategy.  He moved to the Netherlands and the University of Amsterdam in April 2019.
